A Detailed Design is conducted after all design elements in a project are clear and identified. During this stage, all elements will be focused only towards one option. The final document must represent final calculation and schematic diagrams of the decided option. In addition to calculations and drawings, outputs such as 2D and 3D model of the option elements to provide a speifici detailed cost.

The Detailed Design Study is for the upgrade of the South Road – Henley Beach Road intersection as part of Section R4 of the non-stop North-South corridor prescribed in the 30 year Plan for Greater Adelaide. After conducting a feasibility study of the area and weighing up the validity of several design options, Structural Solutions has, in conjunction with DPTI, ascertained that the best possible solution for this intersection is the combination of a Lowered Motorway running north-south which includes a cut and cover tunnel at the Henley Beach Road Intersection making it possible to also maintain an at-grade intersection for local traffic and public transport. The main constraint in this design was the requirement to maintain buildings of significance on both the east and west sides of South Road, namely the Thebarton Theatre/Municipal Council Chambers in the north-west quadrant of the Henley Beach Road intersection and St. Georges College in the north-east. It was also necessary to maintain a minimum of two open lanes on South Road at all times, excepting one 60 hour scheduled occupation period in which all services to be run across the intersection will be installed.
